What is a Cryogenic Valve, and what are its different types? | Gosco Valves


It is remarkable but accurate that we have used valves to control the flow of liquids for thousands of years. Cryogenic valve, while unique, is similar to these age-old designs, only modified to accept shallow temperatures. Characteristic cryogenic valve styles include gate, ball, and globe valves. Gate Valves operate as the name implies, by rising as well as lowering a barrier within the valve body so that the flow of liquid can be turned on, slightly metered and turned off. The gate valve has the advantage of providing straight-through flow when fully open, resulting in very low restriction as well as small pressure drops. Gate valves also typically open using a threaded linear actuator mechanism that slowly raises the gate as a handle is turned. This slow movement mitigates a rapid change in fluid momentum that can result in water hammer.

Different types of Cryogenic Valves


Cryogenic Ball Valves- As the name suggest, this valve has a ball and includes a Polytetrafluroethylene body. These features better flow characteristics than the globe valves. They perform excellently when a tight-stuff is needed in multiple applications. The ball valves are more likely to be worn out along the seals and around the ball itself. They are mostly preferred in applications that require an unrestricted flow path.

Cryogenic Relief Valves- These bring pressures to pre-determined value as well as a shield from over pressurization. The relief valves are intelligent enough to let off stream in case safety limits are exceeded.

Cryogenic Globe Valves- They are named after their spherical shape and contain a removable disk internally that rotates at an angle of ninety degrees to the plane of its body seat. Those are quite complex and great for long-term sealing and performance. However, they may not resist moisture for long and are not suggested for use when the flow rate is paramount.

Cryogenic gate valves- In these valves, there is a wedge-shaped gate that swings to close in line with the mating body seat — the consequences in minimal pressure drop event in its fully open position. Similar to the ball valves, they offer excellent flow characteristics but are hindered by wear and tear.

Cryogenic butterfly valves- The butterfly valves use a circular disk at the center that is responsible for the shorter length of the butterfly valves than the abovementioned varieties of cryogenic valves.
